What is confined space? I guess the definition can easily be inferred from the two phrases. Anyways from the safety point of view, confined space is simply defined as a restricted entry or exit point not designed for operations, but large enough for a person to go in and perform a task, tasks such as a rescue operation or evacuation.
Anytime that there are cases of building collapse or structural damages, it strongly advised that only safety officers with confined space rescue rating should be allowed to go in to rescue trapped victims as is it considered one of the most dangerous and life-threatening rescue operations in the world.
This type of rescue operations can be quite challenging depending on the kind of environment it occurs. Entry or exit points to confined spaces are usually very narrow and dark, which implies that rescuers must be provided with headlamps or any other source of light.
How long does it take to perform Confined space Rescue
In most of the cases in Confined space rescue operations, the exit and entry points are usually blocked, thereby preventing oxygen access. The general safety rule is that every Confined space Rescue must be done within a four minutes window, any time beyond this, rescuers are likely to suffer brain damage or death as a result of the reduction in the flow of oxygen within the confined space.
Categories of Confined Space Rescue
There are three broad categories of confined space rescue, which are :
⦁ Non-entry rescue
⦁ Entry rescue
This is simply defined as the attempt to rescue oneself during a disaster within a confined space
As the name strongly implies , it is the attempt to rescue trapped victim(s) within a confined space without anyone going in to perform such a rescue.
This is often considered the last resort in cases of emergency, personnels trained in Confined space Rescues will be allowed to go in and rescue trapped victims, which sometimes places safety officers at considerable risks. as they have higher probabilities of not making it back or sustaining injuries.
Confined space Rescues are very dangerous, officers who perform rescues must be trained annually at least twice within a year.
